Heritage Month
Location: Monthly guild meeting First United Methodist of Appleton - 325 E
         Franklin St, Appleton

Our 30th Anniversary Year begins!

Join the guild for a social evening with cake, refreshments, and memories. Our charter members and those joining the guild during the early years are invited to reminisce and bring “Show & Tell” of their favorite quilts.

Joanne Rowicki of Gingham Girls has designed a mystery quilt just for the guild’s 30th anniversary. My Stars! Quilting Friends Forever will be a six “clue” mystery. Guild members attending the meeting will be given the ground rules and first clue. We hope to reveal the quilt tops later in the year and provide room to display them at the 2012 Darting Needles Quilt Show. (Guild members not able to attend the meeting will find their information attached to the February newsletter.)

Lecture:
Mary Sue Fenner Trunk Show
Location:
Monthly guild meeting @ 7pm - First United Methodist of Appleton
         325 E Franklin St, Appleton

Mary Sue Fenner Trunk Show

Mary Sue will provide a trunk show of her jackets where guild members can try them on. A few of her creations are pictured.
The first jacket is a Chanel style jacket. Hand woven, hand dyed, and totally sewn with Chanel techniques. This is the most conservative jacket in Mary Sues’ repertoire.

The second example is a ruffled cotton top, puckered with pony merino wool.

A third example of Mary Sue’s work is a woven two layered top, using Pompeii yarn, lined with hand dyed silk.

Many of Mary Sues’ jackets use very creative fabrics and trims in non-conventional ways employing construction techniques that will be familiar to most quilters and garment makers. No need to fear a jacket project when guided by this experienced teacher.

Mary Sue Fenner
A Clothing, Textiles and Design major at UW -Stout, art studies at Newcastle-Upon-Tyne Polytechnic, England, Kansas U. and a UW-Milwaukee MFA give Mary Sue an excellent background in fibers.  Recently she retired from Northeast Wisconsin Technical College, Green Bay, WI where she taught Marketing Communications. Mary Sue maintains her own business, Fiber Designs.  Noted for use of bright colors and her own handspun yarns, her clothing and accessories are seen in area shows, galleries and shops, and featured in Handwoven, Shuttle, Spindle & Dyepot, Belle Armoire, Altered Couture, Sew Somerset and Haute Handbags magazines.

A two-day workshop will be offered April 14 and 15 where students can construct a jacket with the assistance of Mary Sue. Class size will be limited to ensure all students have personal consultation time.

Lecture: Quilt Show University

Location:
Monthly guild meeting @ 7pm - First United Methodist of Appleton

Quilt Show University

2012 is the year of Darting Needles’ biennial quilt show. Many of the programs this year will help members prepare for that event. April’s evening will be a round-robin type of event where mentors can talk and demonstrate to small groups that rotate every half hour.

Many of us have scribed for the quilt show judges over the years and we are going to translate those comments into a night of demos and mentoring. Bindings are always a topic of comment. We hope to show some of the best binding techniques. Quilting – how much is enough? Bring your top or idea and spend some time with a member or two who have some insights on this topic. Hanging sleeve – a topic that makes most of us shutter but a necessity to enter any quilt. Scared to enter? Talk with members whose first-time experience can help you get over those jitters. Ready to go to the next level: a different show in the state or perhaps the leap to national? We have members who can talk about those topics too. What are judges looking for? We never know but we can hazard some good guesses to help you prepare.

Join us for an evening of instruction at Quilt Show University.

Activity: Appliqué Academy
Location: Monthly guild meeting @ 7pm - First United Methodist of Appleton
         325 E Franklin St, Appleton

Appliqué Academy

Spend the day Sunday brushing up on a topic you are interested in. We will bring it all together on Monday evening as we show and tell a whole variety of appliqué techniques.

Sunday there will be a variety of sessions available including regular machine appliqué, Hawaiian appliqué, new methods of preparing for hand appliqué, invisible machine appliqué and using nontraditional fabrics in appliqué. These are not beginner classes; rather a gathering where you can be with a mentor and a few other people doing a similar technique. You will be working on your own project. Working together with a mentor and group of like-minded quilters may provide the stimulus you need to get a stalled project going or the courage to continue on an existing challenge.

Methods and mentors may change as we approach May and see who in our guild can provide help with this program. We may also expand this to two days if demand warrants.

The Monday evening lecture time will be a show and tell opportunity for those who worked over the weekend.

Charlotte Angotti:  www.charlotteangotti.com

She will be visiting with us from South Carolina. We have three days of classes and a lecture to look forward to. Hopefully by this time in September, your quilts for the show will be done and you can begin a new adventure with this experienced national teacher. She comes highly recommended for those who want to learn in a fun environment.

Workshop: Fantastic Fans

Charlotte says “This class is the one that started me thinking about faster ways of doing things. Although I had taken it off my class list I am bringing it back by popular demand. The templates for this fan are available in class. There is a simple way of doing everything and this quilt is the most simple with the most wonderful results. Fabrics that are difficult to use are made into beautiful fan quilts. Students at the beginner level will enjoy this class as well as the very advanced. The students will need a sewing machine that does a blind hem stitch as well as a straight stitch.”

Workshop:
Surprise Yourself (Based on a book Charlotte is coming out with Spring 2012)
Time: TBD

Workshop: Surprise Yourself (Based on a book Charlotte is coming out with Spring 2012)

From Charlotte: “This class is full of information and teaches the way that I cut and design the kits that I use in other classes. I will show the tools that I use, the methods that I use and the way I make color come together. This is a combination of many classes that I have taken and things that I have learned over the years of quilt making. Certain patterns are easier than others and using basic units instead of an entire pattern you can create instead of just copy. This class is made for the intermediate and advanced level quilt maker interested in more creativity that is doable. The class is full of information, real quilts and real solutions to everyday problems in quilt making.”

There is a hand out with this class that includes many patterns and guidelines to refer to once the class is over; there is a charge for this handout of $5.

Lots of quilts will be shown giving many ideas and possible future projects. A mystery project is started in the class along with the learning of the methods. There will be tools available for sale during the class. Students can use them before buying them. (Tools are not required to purchase so they are not asked to bring them to class.)

Workshop: Why Walk When You Can Fly

Does this have curves in it or is that just and illusion? No, curves, just an illusion and there is a dragonfly applique in the pattern as well. He can be hand appliqued or machine appliqued or forgotten all together. This is a good one for intermediate and beyond.
